Projects

I define a project as a task to create a body of work focused on a chosen topic or subject. The sections below identify my recent projects.

The Welsh slate industry dominated the Northwest of Wales for three centuries and employed a huge workforce. It had a vast array of supporting infrastructure including schools, churches, housing, quarrying machinery and transport networks to move the stone. It was a huge enterprise. It declined in the 20th century and although slate quarrying is still ongoing it’s now of a much smaller scale than in earlier centuries. This project is using photography to capture some of what remains from those earlier times.

The project started in 2025 and I chose not to define completion to give me the freedom to progress and evolve the project. So, at this time, I don’t know whether it’ll be in book form like my recent Graffiti and Grunge project, a series of large-format prints or both.

Stone is often thought to be pretty boring. Perhaps it’s something used in building, in walls or just something we walk upon – we don’t usually give it much thought. However, it can have some really interesting colours, textures and shapes. The aim of this project is to capture the close-up beauty of stone by focusing solely on its colours and patterns. It’s work-in-progress at this time.

The city of Bristol has a reputation for its large-scale, outdoor art in the form of large mural’s often on buildings and walls. Over recent years the dirty, working area in the centre that was once docks has been transformed into a tidy and clean tourist friendly area. But Bristol, like many other cities, has a darker side, a side less tourist friendly were graffiti abounds and where litter is commonplace. The aim of this project was to capture the essence of those darker area’s, warts and all, as a record of its time.
